Sainte-Rose occupies the northern tip of Basse-Terre, the mountainous western wing of Guadeloupe. From above it is a stretched, coastal place: a small town centre by the sea, hamlets strung along the shoreline road, and behind them the rising green slopes that climb toward the island's volcanic interior.
