Samannūd sits in Gharbia Governorate in the middle of the Nile Delta, on the western bank of the Damietta branch of the Nile. The river is the town's defining edge, a wide, smooth curve with the town lined up along it. The town stands on the site of ancient Sebennytos, an important city in Pharaonic Egypt.
