San Felipe is the capital of Yaracuy state in north-central Venezuela, set in a valley where the lowland meets forested hills. The earthquake of 1812 destroyed the colonial town, and the city was later rebuilt on nearby ground, so the map shows a regular grid of blocks rather than the tight irregular core found in many older Venezuelan towns.
The ruins of the old town were not cleared but preserved as a park, San Felipe El Fuerte, on the edge of the modern city.
