San Miguel is the largest city in eastern El Salvador and the capital of its department. On a map its central area follows a clear grid of colonial origin, arranged around the main square and the cathedral, while newer neighbourhoods spread outward in less regular patterns. The Pan-American Highway runs through the urban area, drawing a long line across the composition.
Southwest of the city rises the Chaparrastique, also called the San Miguel volcano, one of the most active in the country.
