Sankt Gallen lies in north-eastern Switzerland, in a narrow valley at around 670 metres above sea level, between Lake Constance and the hills of Appenzell. The city stretches for several kilometres from west to east along the valley floor, and its neighbourhoods climb the slopes on both sides. At its centre is the Abbey of Saint Gall, which grew up where the Irish monk Gallus settled in the seventh century.
