São Leopoldo lies in the Sinos River valley, north of Porto Alegre. On a map, the Rio dos Sinos winds along the edge of the city in wide, slow loops, with low floodplain and wetlands beside it. The streets spread away from the river onto slightly higher ground.
The city has a special place in Brazilian history. German immigrants arrived here in 1824, and it is widely regarded as the cradle of German colonisation in Brazil.
