Sebeş sits in Alba County, where the Sebeş River leaves the southern mountains and enters the Mureş valley. Transylvanian Saxons founded the town and called it Mühlbach. It keeps a compact historic centre whose outline still follows its medieval fortifications. The large Lutheran church dominates the centre, and parts of the town walls and towers survive along the edges of the old core. The river runs close by.
