Shahriston lies in the Sughd region of northern Tajikistan, where the plains around Istaravshan give way to the Turkestan range. From above, the town fills a valley opening at the foot of the mountains. The main road runs through it and continues south, climbing towards the Shahriston pass and the tunnel that now carries traffic under it.
Close to the town are the remains of Bunjikat, the old capital of Ustrushana, a historical region of Central Asia known for its early medieval palace ruins and wall paintings.
