Shibata lies on the northern Echigo plain in Niigata Prefecture, a landscape of rice fields and rivers running toward the Sea of Japan. The city grew as the castle town of the Mizoguchi clan, and on the map the old core still gathers around the castle site, with a grid of streets that reflects its Edo-period plan.
Shibata Castle's reconstructed turrets, including a rare three-ridged roof, stand within the grounds of a Self-Defense Force base, with part of the moat still visible.
