From above, Shin’ichi is a place defined by a valley. The built-up area follows a river plain between forested hills. Roads, a railway and rows of houses all run in parallel along the level ground, while the slopes on either side stay almost empty. Shin’ichi was once a town in its own right in eastern Hiroshima Prefecture. It is now part of the city of Fukuyama, and it still keeps the pattern of an inland Japanese valley town.
