Smolensk sits on the upper Dnieper, which runs through the city from east to west. The historic centre lies on the hilly southern bank, where the land is cut by ravines that shape the streets into irregular curves. On the map, the northern bank is flatter, with the railway station and more regular districts, and several bridges cross the river between the two sides.
The Smolensk fortress wall, built at the turn of the seventeenth century, once enclosed the old centre. Long sections and towers still stand, and on the map its outline can still be traced around the historic core.
