Sofrino lies in the Pushkino area of Moscow Oblast, on the railway line that runs northeast from Moscow toward Sergiev Posad. As with many settlements around the capital, the railway shaped its growth. The station acts as the centre of gravity, and the streets on either side extend from it into the surrounding forest.
The settlement is widely known for the Sofrino factory, which produces church items such as icons, vestments and religious objects for the Russian Orthodox Church.
