Sondrio is the capital of Valtellina, the long valley of the Adda river in northern Lombardy. The town sits on the valley floor at the mouth of a side valley, where the Mallero torrent comes down from the north to join the Adda. That gives Sondrio a clear structure on a map: a centre bounded by rivers, the flat valley floor to the south and mountains rising sharply behind.
The slopes above the town are lined with terraced vineyards, among the most characteristic in the Alps, where Nebbiolo, known locally as Chiavennasca, grows behind dry-stone walls.
