Sosnogorsk sits on the Izhma River in the Komi Republic, a short distance from Ukhta, in country where the northern taiga runs almost unbroken. From above, the town is defined by two lines: the curving river and the railway that crosses it. The settlement grew up as a railway point on the line pushing north toward Pechora and Vorkuta, and it later took the name Sosnogorsk, built from the Russian words for pine and hill.
