The heart of Sousse is its medina, a walled rectangle of narrow, crooked lanes that rises gently from the waterfront. On the map it looks like a denser patch of texture framed by straight edges, with the port basins and breakwaters just beyond its lower corner. Outside the walls, newer districts spread in looser blocks, and a coastal road follows the shoreline north toward Port El Kantaoui.
The medina is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, listed as a classic example of an early Islamic coastal town. Long before that the city was Hadrumetum, a Phoenician foundation that later became an important Roman port.
