St Albans stands on rising ground in Hertfordshire, north of London. On a map, the medieval centre sits on the hilltop, where streets meet near the cathedral and the old market. The city takes its name from Alban, traditionally honoured as the first British Christian martyr. The cathedral on the hill has one of the longest naves in England.
