Super Besse lies in the Massif du Sancy in Auvergne, the highest part of France's Massif Central. It is the modern ski station of Besse-et-Saint-Anastaise, built in the 1960s above the old town in an extinct volcanic landscape. From above the resort shows as a compact cluster of apartments and chalets around a small lake, with lifts climbing toward the higher ridges.
Just outside the resort lies Lac Pavin, an almost perfectly circular crater lake surrounded by forest.
