Tasikmalaya lies in the southeastern part of West Java, on an elevated plain in the Priangan highlands. From above, the city forms a dense centre from which roads branch outward through a patchwork of villages, rice fields and small rivers. Mount Galunggung, an active volcano, rises to the northwest and shapes the land around the city.
The central district is organised around the town square and great mosque, with commercial streets and closely packed neighbourhoods spreading from it.
