The Peak is the upper slopes and summit area of Victoria Peak, the highest point on Hong Kong Island. On a map, it is defined almost entirely by terrain. Roads wind back and forth across steep hillsides, paths follow the contours, and buildings sit on platforms cut into the slope. Below, the dense streets of Central and the harbour crowd the edge of the frame.
The Peak Tram, running since 1888, climbs the slope in a single straight line, in striking contrast to the looping roads around it. Near the top, Lugard Road and Harlech Road form a walking circuit around the summit.
