The Toki River runs through the city, and the main streets and railway line follow the valley floor, with neighbourhoods climbing into the wooded hills on either side. The built-up area is long and irregular, broken by forested slopes, so the map shows a series of connected valleys, not a single dense centre.
Toki is in Gifu Prefecture, in the Tōnō area east of Nagoya, and is one of the main production centres of Mino ware, a style of Japanese ceramics with a history of several centuries. Much of the tableware used in Japan is made in this region. The JR Chūō Line runs through the city and connects it to Nagoya.
