Torreón is the main city of the Comarca Lagunera, an irrigated farming region in the arid north of Mexico. It grew around the railway at the end of the nineteenth century and became a city in 1907, which explains its strikingly regular grid of wide, straight streets. Across the Nazas River, usually a dry sandy bed, lie Gómez Palacio and Lerdo in the state of Durango.
The three cities form one continuous metropolitan area divided by a state line, a relationship that is easy to read on a map.
