Três Rios, meaning three rivers, is in the interior of Rio de Janeiro State near the border with Minas Gerais. The name is literal. The Paraíba do Sul, the Paraibuna and the Piabanha meet here, and the town grew around their confluence. On the map, water shapes the whole composition.
The Paraíba do Sul is the widest of the three and runs across the municipality as a heavy, winding band.
