Tura is the headquarters of West Garo Hills district in Meghalaya, in the far west of the state near the borders with Bangladesh and Assam. It is the largest town in the Garo Hills and a centre for the Garo people. From above, the town looks nothing like a plains settlement: its streets bend and fold along ridges and valleys, following the terrain closely.
The layout is shaped by slopes. Main roads trace contour lines and switch back between levels, while houses spread along spurs and down into small valleys.
