Turmalina is in northeastern Minas Gerais, in the Jequitinhonha Valley, a region of dry uplands and deep river valleys. The town sits on uneven ground, and its streets bend to follow the slopes instead of forming a strict grid. The name comes from tourmaline, the gemstone found in the region, and mineral heritage is part of local identity.
