Tyler is the seat of Smith County in East Texas, a region of pine forest and rolling hills. The city grew from a central square around the county courthouse, and the older streets near downtown follow a regular grid. Beyond them, curving residential streets wind through wooded lots. Tyler calls itself the Rose Capital of America. The surrounding area was once a leading centre of commercial rose growing.
