Usinsk lies in the north of the Komi Republic, just south of the Arctic Circle, near the Usa River, a major tributary of the Pechora. It was built from the late 1960s to serve the oilfields of the region. From the start it was a planned town, and this shows clearly on a map: its shape is deliberate, compact and very different from the land around it.
The residential centre is a tight grid of apartment blocks and straight streets. It is designed to keep distances short in a long, hard winter.
