Uzhhorod is the westernmost regional centre of Ukraine. It lies in Zakarpattia, right on the border with Slovakia and close to Hungary. The Uzh River runs through the middle of the city and divides the historic centre from districts built largely in the twentieth century. On a map the river is the clearest line in the composition.
The old town climbs toward the castle hill, where Uzhhorod Castle overlooks a tangle of narrow, curving streets.
