Vũng Tàu sits on a narrow peninsula that sticks out into the South China Sea southeast of Ho Chi Minh City. Two hills, Núi Lớn and Núi Nhỏ, rise at the tip, and the city spreads over the flatter land between them and the mainland. Front Beach curves along the calm western bay, and Back Beach runs in a long straight line along the eastern side.
A large statue of Christ stands on top of Núi Nhỏ, with its arms open toward the sea, and a lighthouse stands nearby. Vũng Tàu is also the base for Vietnam's offshore oil industry. Once the centre of Bà Rịa–Vũng Tàu Province, it became part of Ho Chi Minh City in the 2025 reorganisation of provinces.
