Weiden in der Oberpfalz sits in northeastern Bavaria, a short drive from the Czech border. On a map its centre reads as one long market place. The old town stretches along a single axis, and narrow lanes branch off it at right angles. Around it the streets loosen into residential quarters, rail lines and industrial blocks, and the whole plan settles into the gentle, wooded country of the Upper Palatinate.
The Waldnaab runs past the town on its way south, drawing a soft line of meadow and riverbank along one side of the plan.
