Wenquan is a town in the northeast of Chongqing municipality, in the steep, folded terrain north of the Yangtze. The name means “hot spring”, a feature associated with many places of the same name across China. From above, the town is shaped by its valley. Streets run along the river, buildings crowd onto the flatter ground, and the slopes rise quickly on either side.
Like many mountain towns in this part of China, Wenquan is long and narrow rather than broad. Roads follow the watercourses and switch back up the hillsides, and farms and hamlets are scattered across terraces.
