Wittstock/Dosse lies in the north-west of Brandenburg. It has one of the most complete medieval town walls in Germany, and on a map that wall is the first thing you notice: a closed oval of brick fortifications around the old town, with narrow streets and a market square inside. The small rivers Dosse and Glinze flow along its edges.
At one corner of the wall stands the Alte Bischofsburg, a former residence of the bishops of Havelberg. Outside town, in 1636, the Battle of Wittstock was fought during the Thirty Years' War, and a museum in the old castle tells its story.
