Xiva, also written Khiva, lies in the Khorezm oasis of western Uzbekistan, on irrigated land near the lower course of the Amu Darya. At its centre is Itchan Kala, a walled inner town whose clay ramparts form a rectangle on the map. Inside is a dense network of narrow streets, mosques, madrasas and courtyards. The outer city, fields and canals spread around it.
In 1990 Itchan Kala became the first site in Uzbekistan on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Its skyline is marked by the squat, tiled Kalta Minor minaret, which was never finished, and the tall Islam Khodja minaret.
