Yachiyo lies in northwestern Chiba Prefecture, in the commuter belt east of central Tokyo. The Shinkawa River runs north to south through the middle of the city on its way from the Inba-numa marshes, and a wide strip of low, open ground follows it. Yachiyo grew fast in the second half of the twentieth century as housing estates went up along the Keisei and Tōyō Rapid railway lines.
