Yara is in Granma province in eastern Cuba, on the broad plain that runs from the Sierra Maestra foothills toward the Gulf of Guacanayabo. From above, the town is a compact grid of streets surrounded by flat agricultural land. The name Yara has a special place in Cuban history. The Grito de Yara, the 1868 call to arms that opened Cuba's first war of independence, is linked to this area.
