Yashio sits on the low alluvial plain of southeastern Saitama Prefecture, just north of Tokyo's Adachi ward. From above it is almost perfectly flat, and water shapes it: rivers run along its edges, and the Naka River forms a long, gently curving boundary on the east. Inside those lines, a fine network of residential lanes fills nearly every block.
The city's rail spine is fairly new. The Tsukuba Express opened in 2005 and runs through Yashio on its way from Akihabara to Tsukuba, and new housing and roads grew up around the station.
