Yell Map Poster & Print
Yell is the second largest island in Shetland, lying between the Mainland and Unst. Much of it is blanket peat and open moorland, with few trees and a scattering of small lochs, so the land looks broad and unbroken on a map. The coastline is another matter, cut by long sea inlets, known locally as voes, that reach deep into the island from both sides.
Near Mid Yell, inlets from east and west come close to meeting, pinching the island into a narrow waist. A main road runs the length of Yell, connecting the ferry terminals at Ulsta in the south, which links to the Mainland, and Gutcher in the north, which links onward to Unst. Settlements are small and strung along this spine and the sheltered shores.
A Yell map poster is a study in northern coastline: the long body of the island, the fingers of sea pushing into it, and the thin line of road tying ferry to ferry. It suits people from Shetland, walkers who know the island's otters and seabirds, and anyone who likes a map where the sea shapes nearly everything on land.

Ferry to ferry road
The main road runs from Ulsta to Gutcher, a single line through the moorland that joins the island's southern and northern ferry crossings.
Moorland and lochs
Wide peat moorland dotted with small lochs fills the interior, rendered as open ground scattered with small water shapes between the two coasts.

Yell hangs on walls in Shetland and far beyond it, often in the homes of families who left the islands generations ago. Its long outline and deep voes make an elegant vertical composition that suits hallways and narrow alcoves.
