Zaranj is the capital of Nimroz province, in Afghanistan's far southwest, right on the border with Iran. The city sits in the Sistan basin, where the Helmand River ends in a system of channels, marshes and seasonal lakes. From above, the green of the irrigated land looks sharply cut out against the surrounding desert, and the city's streets spread across a flat, almost featureless plain.
The border is the main reason Zaranj matters. A highway built with Indian assistance links the city to Delaram and the main Afghan road network, making Zaranj an important trade crossing toward Iran.
