Stone kremlin
The sixteenth-century fortress forms a sharp rectangle near the river. Its regular geometry is the visual centre of the map, set against the softer lines of the town.

Zaraysk Map Poster & Print
Zaraysk stands on the Osyotr River in the south-east of Moscow Oblast. At its heart is the Zaraysk Kremlin, a compact brick fortress built in the 1520s and 1530s. It is rectangular with round and square towers and is one of the best preserved in the region. On the map, its crisp outline sits on a rise above the river, with the town's streets arranged around it.
The area is older still. Excavations on the edge of town uncovered the Zaraysk Palaeolithic site, which yielded carved ivory figures tens of thousands of years old. The sculptor Anna Golubkina was born in Zaraysk, and her house is now a museum.
A Zaraysk map poster brings out the town's clear, centred plan. In black and white, the kremlin's rectangle stands out beside the curving Osyotr. The older streets fan out from it, and the river valley winds gently through the surrounding countryside, giving a composition that is both historic and balanced.

Osyotr valley
The Osyotr River curves below the old town through a wooded valley. Its meanders frame the settlement and add graceful movement to the composition.
Old town streets
Streets around the kremlin follow an older plan of straight axes and small blocks. This gives the centre a tidy structure, clearly different from the looser outskirts.
