Zhoujiaba is part of Wanzhou, the largest urban district in northeastern Chongqing, set above the Yangtze in hilly country. Flat land is scarce here, so the map looks unusual. Streets run in tiers along the slope, joined by sharp bends and short connecting roads, and blocks of high-rise housing sit on terraces cut into the hillside.
The Three Gorges Dam changed this stretch of the Yangtze dramatically. As the reservoir filled in the early 2000s, the water rose and large parts of Wanzhou were rebuilt higher up the slopes.
