Zintan sits high in the Nafusa Mountains of north-western Libya, on the plateau above the coastal plain that stretches toward Tripoli. The land around it is arid and open, and the map reflects that. The town became widely known in 2011, when its fighters played a prominent role in the Libyan uprising. Outside Libya, it has been associated with that period ever since.
