Zossen lies south of Berlin in Brandenburg, in a landscape of pine forest, lakes and flat sandy ground shaped by the last ice age. The municipality includes Wünsdorf, which for much of the 20th century was one of Germany's most important military sites. It housed the German high command's bunker complexes during the Second World War and later became the headquarters of Soviet forces in East Germany until 1994.
