Zushi faces Sagami Bay on the western side of the Miura Peninsula, between Kamakura and Hayama. The town fills a short strip of lowland behind a gently curved beach, and the Tagoe River runs through it down to the sea. Steep wooded hills close in on three sides, so the streets stop abruptly where the slopes begin, a clear line on any map.
Since the late nineteenth century Zushi has been a seaside retreat for people from Tokyo and Yokohama. Today it is a commuter town with a strong beach culture. From above the contrast is striking.
