Abay Map Poster & Print
Abay is a town in the Turkistan Region, in the far south of Kazakhstan, not far from the border with Uzbekistan. The name is one of the most common place names in the country. It honours Abai Qunanbaiuly, the nineteenth-century poet who is widely regarded as a founder of modern Kazakh literature.
From above, the setting is agricultural. The town's streets are set out in a mostly regular pattern, with blocks of low houses and gardens. Beyond them the land is divided into long rectangular fields, and irrigation channels and field roads run in parallel lines. This geometry is typical of the cultivated plains in this part of Central Asia.
A Abay map poster shows two textures side by side. One is the fine grid of the settlement. The other is the larger ruled pattern of the fields around it. With no coastline or mountain in the frame, the drawing depends on repetition and alignment, which gives it a calm, almost textile quality in monochrome.

Irrigation lines
Canals and ditches that water the fields cross the plain in thin lines, often parallel to the roads.
Garden-lined blocks
Residential streets form fairly regular blocks of single-storey houses with yards. The result is an even, open grid, not a dense core.

For people from southern Kazakhstan, this is a map of home. It records a street layout and a field pattern that are hard to put into words. On a wall it looks structured and quiet, and it works well in a modern interior.
You can add a title, for example the town's name in Kazakh or Russian, along with a subtitle such as a date. You can also edit the coordinates line and choose between Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint and Sand.
