The Casbah
The old medina is a dense cluster of narrow lanes and stairways on the hillside above the port, a patch of very fine texture that stands out immediately.

Algiers Map Poster & Print
Algiers wraps around a broad crescent bay on the Mediterranean, and its streets rise from the water in layers, following the hills of the Sahel behind. From above, the city looks like an amphitheatre: long waterfront avenues at the bottom, then switchbacks and winding roads climbing toward the heights of El Biar and beyond. The bay itself gives the map its dominant curve.
At the western end of the bay the Casbah, a UNESCO World Heritage site, forms a tight knot of alleys and stairways on a steep slope, completely different in texture from the French-era boulevards below it. Along the harbour, an arcaded seafront avenue runs above the port. To the east, the Jardin d'Essai botanical garden and, further on, the Great Mosque of Algiers mark the coastline.
Algiers is the capital and largest city of Algeria, long called Alger la Blanche for its whitewashed buildings seen from the sea. Its Great Mosque, opened in recent years, has the tallest minaret in the world. An Algiers map poster traces the bay, the hills and the dense old quarter in one sweeping composition.

Bay of Algiers
A wide, even crescent of coastline curves from the old port toward Cape Matifou in the east, framing the entire city and anchoring the composition.
Hillside switchbacks
Roads climbing from the waterfront to the upper districts twist in tight loops, drawing contour-like patterns that reveal how steep the terrain behind the bay really is.
