Añatuya sits in the southeast of Santiago del Estero province, on the wide, level country of the Argentine Chaco. From above, the town reads as an orderly grid of square blocks with almost no change in height to bend it. The streets run in clean parallel lines, and the plan stops sharply where the fields and scrubland begin.
The town grew up with the railway, and the track is still one of the strongest lines on the map, a long diagonal that the urban blocks arrange themselves around. Plazas break the grid at regular intervals, and wider avenues mark the main routes in and out. Beyond the edge, rural roads carry on in the same straight lines toward distant estancias.
Añatuya is also the seat of a Catholic diocese, so it serves as a religious and administrative centre for a large, thinly populated area. Square block grid
Small square blocks repeat in every direction on flat ground. With no hills or rivers to bend them, they make a very regular, almost graphic pattern.
Edge of the plain
The town ends abruptly and gives way to open Chaco farmland. Straight rural roads keep going to the edge of the frame, which shows just how flat and wide this country is.
