As-Suwayda sits on the western slopes of Jabal al-Arab, also known as Jabal al-Druze, the volcanic highland of southern Syria. The ground rises toward the east, and the street network follows that rise. There is a denser older core, and newer districts spread out along the roads that run across the plateau toward surrounding villages.
The city is closely tied to the dark basalt of the region. Traditional buildings and many ancient remains are built from this black volcanic stone. In Roman times the settlement was known as Dionysias, and traces of that period survive in the city. Today As-Suwayda is the main centre of a governorate with a largely Druze population.
On the map, the terrain gives the streets a slightly irregular, contoured feel, unlike the flat plains to the west. A As-Suwayda map poster shows the compact centre, the roads branching out over the highland and the edges where the city meets fields and orchards on volcanic soil.

The older centre is a tighter cluster of streets where the basalt-built city grew. It forms the densest part of the map, with newer districts spreading out around it.
Roads across the plateau
Several roads leave the city toward villages on the highland. On the poster they read as clean lines crossing open agricultural land on dark volcanic soil.
