Atauro lies across the strait from Dili, the capital of Timor-Leste, close enough to be seen from the city on a clear day. It is a mountainous island that rises steeply from the sea, with only a thin band of flatter land along parts of the coast. Villages such as Beloi and Vila sit on this edge, linked mostly by tracks and paths rather than a dense road network.
The waters around Atauro are known for their reef life. A 2016 survey by Conservation International recorded some of the highest average reef fish diversity measured anywhere in the world, and community-managed marine areas help protect it. During the Portuguese colonial period, the island was used as a place of exile and imprisonment.

The centre of the island rises steeply to its highest peaks. This largely roadless interior reads as open space on the map, with the detail pushed out to the edges.

A band of coral reef wraps much of the coastline, marking the shallow edge of the island before the seabed drops away into the deep strait toward Timor.
