Auxerre stands on the left bank of the Yonne in northern Burgundy, its old town climbing a hillside above the river. Seen from the water, the skyline is dominated by the Gothic Cathedral of Saint-Étienne and the abbey of Saint-Germain. On a map, their location shows how tightly the medieval town was packed onto the slope above the quays.
An Auxerre map poster shows a dense knot of narrow, irregular streets enclosed by a ring of boulevards. These wide avenues follow the line of the former fortifications and give the historic centre a clear, rounded outline.
