Two rivers
The small Balakliika River runs through the town toward the much larger Siverskyi Donets. The Donets' looping channel and meadows shape the wider view.

Balakliya Map Poster & Print
Balakliya lies in Kharkiv Oblast in eastern Ukraine, on the Balakliika River close to where it joins the Siverskyi Donets. From above, the town has a fairly regular pattern of streets and blocks. The river valley bounds it, and the broad floodplain and forests of the Donets stretch beyond the built-up edge.
A railway line crosses the town, and larger industrial sites sit toward the outskirts. Balakliya became widely known in 2017, when fires and explosions at a large military ammunition depot nearby forced residents to evacuate. In 2022 Russian forces occupied the town during the full-scale invasion, and Ukrainian forces retook it in September of that year.
A Balakliya map poster records the town as a set of lasting lines: the river, the streets laid out over decades, and the paths toward the forest. For people who have lived here, left or returned, the map is a way to hold on to a specific place through difficult years, and to keep its shape close wherever they are now.

Regular blocks
Residential streets form a largely orderly pattern of private houses and apartment blocks. It is easy to read on the poster and familiar to anyone who knows the towns of eastern Ukraine.
Forest edge
Woodland along the Donets valley appears as open space around the built-up area, which gives the town a clear boundary on the map.
