Banaba Island Map Poster & Print
Banaba Island, formerly known as Ocean Island, lies in the Pacific Ocean west of the Gilbert Islands and is part of Kiribati. Unlike the low atolls that make up most of the country, it is a raised coral island with higher ground in its centre and a compact, rounded outline.
For much of the twentieth century the island was mined for phosphate, which reshaped its landscape and led to most of the Banaban people being relocated to Rabi Island in Fiji. A small community lives on the island today, and the connection between Banaba and Rabi remains an important part of Banaban identity.
A Banaba Island map poster is a small outline set in a large field of ocean. There are few roads and settlements, so the composition rests on the island's shape and its isolation. For Banaban families and descendants, and for anyone who knows the island's story, it is a map of home as much as a map of place.

Raised interior
Higher ground in the centre of the island reflects its origin as raised coral, a landscape later altered by decades of phosphate mining.
Open Pacific
With no nearby islands, Banaba sits alone within the frame, surrounded on all sides by open ocean.
